What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight, also called volumetric weight, converts package volume into a reference weight. It helps describe how much space a shipment occupies relative to its physical weight.

How to calculate dimensional weight

Multiply length, width, and height in one compatible unit system, divide by the selected divisor for one package, then multiply by the number of identical packages.

Metric example

50 × 40 × 30 cm ÷ 5000 = 12 kg per package. Two identical packages total 24 kg of dimensional weight.

Imperial example

20 × 15 × 10 in ÷ 139 ≈ 21.583 lb per package. Three identical packages total about 64.748 lb.

A dimensional divisor is a density conversion rule, not a universal constant. The listed values are reference options; verify the current rule for the relevant provider, service, and transport mode.

Dimensional, actual, and chargeable weight

Actual weight comes from a scale. Dimensional weight comes from package volume and a divisor. Chargeable weight may compare those values and apply separate minimums or rounding rules, so this tool does not calculate it.

No. Actual weight is measured on a scale. Chargeable weight may compare actual and dimensional weight and apply separate minimum or rounding rules.

Is dimensional weight the same as CBM?

No. CBM is a volume measurement in cubic metres. Dimensional weight uses package volume and a divisor to produce a reference weight in kilograms or pounds.
